The 36-year-old Republican woman from the Rio Grande Valley will represent a slice of South Texas in Washington for the next seven months. Flores’ big win on Tuesday (June 14) marked several firsts for the region.
Flores cruised to victory in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, where former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela resigned in March to work for a lobbying firm.
She received 51 percent of the vote in one of the most Latino districts in the country, and one where Democrats have routinely won by comfortable margins for years.
The Republican woman won the special election without a runoff. The district lines are changing for the next election scheduled later this year, but she will remain in office until January.
Mayra Flores, Texas’ 34th Congressional District’s newly elected representative, earns $174,000 per year on average. A probe into her assets revealed she is over $5 million dollars wealthy. It is a known fact that all her wealth was acquired through politics.
